Past and present of the earthen architectures in China and Italy
As part of the bilateral projects between the National Research Council (CNR) and the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage (CACH), the research project “Assessment of innovative methods for the conservation of earthen surface” was financed for the period 2016 -2018. The research undertaken by the two teams aimed to promote a better knowledge of the earthen architecture in China and Italy, exchange and sharing of experiences about methods, tools, protocols and best practices for the conservation of earthen materials.
This fragile architecture, due to the poor durability of earthen materials against atmospheric agents, is in a situation of great risk considering also the problem of climate change.
This book examines the historical use of this material for architecture, the different types of earthen construction in Italy and in China, the conservation techniques used in the respective countries and the researches that are being carried out to improve these interventions.
New opportunities that the earthen architecture can have in future in the two countries are illustrated.

China and Italy: Routes of Culture, Valorization and Management
The Bilateral project “Routes of Culture: Enhancement and Management of large-scale Heritage sites. Via Appia - Roman Consular street - and Grand Canal of China” was financed by the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage (CACH) for the period 2016-2018. The research undertaken by the two teams aimed to promote a better understanding of cultural heritage conservation, valorization and management policies and tools in the two countries particularly with reference to big scale heritage sites. The initiative launched in 2016 by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBACT) promoting the candidacy of the entire Appia Antica as a cultural route and known as the “Appia Regina Viarum” project, led us to extend our collaboration to MiBACT. This volume presents the outcome of this collaboration between the three institutions, enhancing mutual knowledge and promoting a long-lasting cooperation among the two countries on conservation, valorization and management of big heritage sites and cultural routes.

Preserving, managing and enhancing the archaeological sites: comparative perspectives between China and Italy
Italy and China, although they are very different in geographical scale, have the bigger number of World Heritage sites included in the UNESCO List. Thus, apart from the most famous and frequented areas there is a multitude of lesser-known sites, including many archaeological sites, suffering from poor local development, the lack of adequate conservation interventions and enhancement, and limited tourist flows. Nevertheless, all these sites have to face daily issues related to conservation, management and enhancement. These are not simple issues to deal with, given that these actions are part of a broader and more intricate framework of interconnections of economic, political, social and cultural factors, determined not only by local and national dynamics but, often, by global trends.
The volume collects the contributions of a multidisciplinary team of scholars and representatives of local authorities with the aim of presenting a review of positive and current cases in both nations in the field of conservation and restoration, management and promotion of archaeological sites, aiming at creating a shared knowledge base, useful in identifying joint research solutions and initiatives.

This volume inaugurates a series of publications aiming to disseminate the research outputs arising from the CNR-CACH Bilateral Agreement of Scientific and Technological Cooperation - focusing on cultural heritage conservation, valorization and management - signed in November 2014, between the National Research Council of Italy and the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage.
This first volume collects some of the papers presented during the international conferences organized by the two Institutions, respectively in Rome in November 2014 and in Dazu in June 2015, when exploring their respective fields of interest and expertise.
