The Spool-LAB
An Interdisciplinary Research to Investigate the Iron Age Clay Spool-Shaped Objects from Tille Höyük, South-Eastern Anatolia
Acronym: The Spool-LAB
Description
The project aims to provide new insights on the Iron Age textile industry uncovered at the site of Tille Höyük (Turkey) by the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA). The assemblage mostly consists of the so-called “spools”, small-sized unfired clay cylinders that copiously surface throughout the eastern Mediterranean basin towards the end of the 2nd millennium BC and the interpretation of which still remains nowadays largely speculative. The analysis will begin with a meticulous archival study, followed by the application of non-invasive archaeometrical methods as well as digital and experimental techniques.
