Traditional Knowledge for the Conservation of the Silk Roads Monumental Terracruda Sculptures
Acronym: TANTRiC
Description
TANTRiC aims to study and preserve the traditional knowledge related to the creation of monumental clay-based sculptures, an ancient art form exclusive of Asia originated at the heart of the Silk Roads over 2,000 years ago.
The project's ultimate goal is to uncover the cultural significance of this unique artistic practice and, through scientific methods, inspire innovative and sustainable solutions for the conservation of these sculptures when found in archaeological and historical contexts. To achieve this, TANTRiC employs an interdisciplinary methodological approach, combining heritage science, ethnographic research, and conservation techniques.
The expected results are:
- deepening our understanding of the origins, significance, and evolution of the artistic practice through the study of raw materials and their selection;
- preserving and promoting the traditional knowledge associated with it;
- developing evidence-based conservation treatments; and d) demonstrating how the exploration of traditional green materials can lead to more sustainable and responsible heritage conservation strategies.
